Hardcover
by Chapman, Charles
[Higginson Books, Salem, MA, 1997]. Hardcover. Near Fine. Thick Quarto. Reprint of the 1880 edition. [13]-966 pages; illustrations. The Gazetteer of Illinois and Missouri, published in 1822, mentioned Chicago as "a village of Pike County" containing 12 or 15 houses and about 60 or 70 inhabitants. As Chicago grew and the county which originally extended to Wisconsin now shrunk--one thing remained--it had important historical connections. The first 188 pages deal with Illinois history, the next 780 pages deal with Pike County's earliest days, its growth, its leading citizens, etc. The Digest of State Laws is amusing. "the husband is bound to love his wife and bear with her faults, and, if possible, by mild means, to correct them....he has a right to establish himself wherever he may please, and in this he cannot be controlled by his wife. This is the large hardcover reprint of the 1880 edition with the blue buckram binding and not edited thus exactly as the original edition. (Inventory #: 018511)
