by Ely, Alfred and Charles Lanman (editor)
New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1862. Hardcover. F (A reading copy only, and a prime candidate for rebinding. All spine material is gone, both boards are loose and present; book block is still intact and pages are free of foxing, though close lines of text and the engraved frontispiece have bled slightly onto adjacent pages, as old books do.). Gray-brown cloth boards, 359 pp., one BW plate as frontispiece. The American Civil War was just a year in progress when this book first appeared. Alfred Ely (1815-1892) was a Republican Congressman from New York. In July 1861, he witnessed the Battle of Bull Run in Virginia, was captured, and was kept in Libby Prison in Richmond for almost six months, along with many others. Upon his release, the journal he had kept in prison also came to light. Ely went on to continue his political and lengthy law career. Please note that this is an original publication and is not an e-book, new paperback, or print-on-demand copy. It needs some help physically, but it still tells an important story.
