1803 · Philadelphia
by [Jefferson, Thomas]
Philadelphia, 1803. 50pp. Dbd. Significant foxing on titlepage, light scattered foxing elsewhere, else very good. Second edition, following the very rare Washington edition of the same year. One of the most important documents of the post- Louisiana Purchase period. Based on material assembled by Thomas Jefferson, this publication provided basic knowledge of Louisiana to a country hungry to hear about it. It was the first real account of the vast new western territory to become available to the American people, and as such, the magnitude of its importance is obvious. It gives details of geography, inhabitants, Indians, laws, agriculture, and navigation. Howes erroneously lists an earlier edition of 1800. HOWES L493. SHAW & SHOEMAKER 3617. WAGNER-CAMP 2b:8. STREETER SALE 1576. REESE, FEDERAL HUNDRED 96 (ref). REESE, BEST OF THE WEST 26 (ref).
