The House Committee of Ways and Means approves a request from the collectors of some of the most important American ports for a raise in salary. They further request a report from the Treasury Department on the salaries of the said collectors. Also included is a two-page opinion from Treasury Secretary Gallatin concurring with the House. In the SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT, the House Committee provides the findings of their inquiry into the actual salaries of the collectors, deems them adequate, and overturns their previous recommendation.
