The first American edition (styled "Second Edition" on the titlepage) of the first history of New York, originally published in London in 1757, followed by a second London printing in 1776. The second leaf states: "To the citizens of the united states. The re-publication of this volume is the first part of a plan undertaken at the desire of several gentlemen of taste, who wish to supply their libraries with histories of their native country. Should the design meet with public encouragement, the most valuable histories of the other provinces shall be re- published in regular succession by the public's humble servant, Mathew Carey, Philad.
