1873 · New York
by [Hayden, Ferdinand V.]
New York, 1873. 8pp. Large folio newspaper. Extra No. 14. Lightly tanned, else near fine. This large, densely worded newspaper, printed six columns to a page, carries a long eyewitness report of Ferdinand V. Hayden's 1873 exploration of Colorado, written by a NEW YORK TRIBUNE correspondent. The dispatches run from mid-July to early September, and include one of the earliest reports of the discovery of the Mount of the Holy Cross in July 1873. A letter to the editor from Hayden appealing for public support for his exploration is also printed. This expedition served as the capstone of Hayden's long career and produced important information about the geography of Colorado. The second half of the issue is taken up by a series of lectures delivered by Harvard professor Louis A. Agassiz on his explorations of the Amazon. This edition of the NEW YORK TRIBUNE was part of a special series of "Extras" on specific, largely scientific, topics (Inventory #: WRCAM31244)
