Message from the President of the United States transmitting the Report of the Commission of Fine Arts for the fiscal year ended June 30, 1912
by Commission of Fine Arts
Washington, DC: Government Printing Office, 1912. Hardcover. G (Bindings are aged and soiled but have little edge wear; edges of book block have some foxing and text page surfaces are generally clear; plate pages may have some foxing.). Brown cloth, 54 pp., 13 duotone plates, 2 fold-outs. 62d Congress: 3d Session, December 2, 1912-March 4, 1913; Senate Documents, Vol. 6. The Commission of Fine Arts is an independent federal agency that was established in 1910. This appears to be its first formal report. The founding members were: architect Daniel H. Burnham, landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, architect Thomas Hastings, sculptor Daniel Chester French, painter and sculptor Francis Davis Millet, architect Cass Gilbert, and city planner Charles Moore. Millet died on the Titanic in 1912, and Burnham died soon afterward as well. Painter Edwin H. Blashfield and architect Peirce Anderson took their places. Here you can see the group's recommendations for monuments in the District of Columbia and elsewhere, including the Lincoln Memorial and others. An interesting historical glimpse into sites we now assume have always been there. And what a talented assembly of men to make these recommendations!
