First edition, later issue (without the dedication leaf). 8vo. x, 304 pp. Thompson (1798-1868), a native of Anderson County, South Carolina, graduated from South Carolina College in 1814, read law, and was admitted to the bar, practicing law in Edgefield through 1824; he served in Congress, 1835-1841, and as U.S. minister to Mexico, 1842-1844, experience forming the basis of this book, "a calm, judicious volume still cited by historians" (DAB).
