Folio. 243 pp. Profusely illustrated from photographs, plans, endpaper maps. Architectural history of the coastal regions of South Carolina, in the "great plantation age," roughly 1700 to the Civil War. "The photographs were taken by Frances Benjamin Johnston in 1938 and by Ben Judah Lubschez in 1928" (all identified with the photographers' initials). Inscribed by Johnston in 1943, by the author in 1955, and by the editors in 1958. Mangum Weeks's copy, with his ownership signature on a front endpaper and his pencil annotations scattered through the text; Weeks was an important voice in the historic preservation movement during the first half of the 20th century and the son of North Carolina bibliographer Stephen Weeks. Very good. Original tan cloth, decorated tan dust jacket (spine with crease marks and one short split from the base of the spine), broken publisher's slipcase with pictorial paper label on upper board.
