He arrived in Portland, Oregon on April 22, 1879. He states of the river Columbia: "We hear much of the mighty Hudson, but it is an insignificant stream compared with the Columbia. If this river had country seats such as adorn the Hudson, it would be unequalled. Its scenery both in variety and picturesqueness far exceeds anything of the river."
