Santa Barbara: Privately Published, 1980s. This very unusual piece of Len Deighton ephemera is a color facsimile reproduction of a postcard with dramatic artwork showing the Zeppelin Hindenburg flying over the Atlantic that was sent by the American firm the Tide Water Oil Company on the maiden flight of the Hindenburg to America arriving May 9, 1936. On the verso of the postcard in the upper left hand corner is printed “From LEN DEIGHTON” and were used by Deighton as notecards to write people and a number were distributed to select people with books by either his publisher or publicist. The text on the front of the card reads “ON BOARD THE HINDENBURG - This card was carried on the Hindenburg on its initial flight from Friedrichshafen to Lakehurst, N.J. It is mailed to you with the compliments of the Tide Water Oil Company whose product was selected to lubricate the giant ship.” 3 3/4 by 6 inches. Scarce. (Inventory #: 15091J)
