Appleton. Appleton, D.. Appleton's American Standard Geographies: Higher Geography. Utah Edition. NY: Appleton, 1881. 128, viiipp. Illustrated. 4to. Book condition: Good with rubbing to extremities, exposed corners, spotting to endsheets and title page. Front endsheet is missing and there are a few short closed tears in the text block. The contents are mostly very clean with many lovely engravings and color maps. A charming volume with descriptions of the Earth, continents, countries and regions, along with exercise questions. Appendix on Utah at the end of the volume. Warning: there is an emphasis on the United States, and the part on "Man" describes the obsolete racial classification, using the word "Negro" and stating that the Caucasian race is "the most intellectual and civilized race". The description of the African people is even more upsetting and illustrates the ignorance of the 19th century. Book should be considered a historical artifact, relevant to its time . . Good. 1881.
