Edinbugrh: Printed for the Author and Sold By William Creech, 1787. Octavo. xlviii, -368 pages, half-title, portrait frontispiece and subscriber's list present. The second state of the second edition. Besides the major point of "stinking" for "slinking" on p. 363, here the subscriber's list is somewhat larger than the first state of the second edition, Burns' correspondence reveals that the subscribers list grew at a faster rate than he had anticipated. Additional typesetting was required on the early pages through page 288. The new sheets on the second state were reset and published on April 17, 1787. From Burns own notes it would appear that there were 1500 copies printed for each state (with a total number of 2900 subscribers for both). Creech the printer and distributor was unable to sell a large number of his copies so sent some of them to London to be sold by A. Strahan and T. Cadell, thus this London imprint is the Third Edition. Consequently, the second state of the second edition has become the more scarce of the two states.
