An early issue of the First edition of the First Voyage which lacks the f2 (placement of the cuts and chart) but retains the large folding chart of the Straits of Magellan. [Hocken pp. 10-11; Spence p.9; Rothchild 668] and first editions of volumes two and three in which the pagination in these two volumes is continuous rather than separate pagination. On laid paper marked GR. All together containing 204 Maps, Plates, Plans or Views, most folding, and includes Webber's Death of Cook Plate (in Atlas volume)., [Davidson, pp. 53-54: "The importance of the work cannot be overstated as it is not only the first published account of the voyage but it is also an interesting narrative of the expedition.... It will always be a highlight of any collection." ] Bookplate: The Hon. George Baillie, Esq. One of the Lords of the Treasury 1724 in all eight volumes while atlas volume contains the bookplate of Henry Goodwin Rooth (1861-1928) who was a West India merchant and ship-owner, barrister, Metropolitan Police Court Magistrate (1917-1928). All the 8 volumes with very early rebacking with original spines laid down and superbly executed without disturbing the endpapers. There are a few internal repairs but most are marginal without penetrating any plates with the exception of a corner or two and again masterfully done. Some occasional foxing or off-setting to facing pages of plates, plates may exhibit minor toning but mostly clean. Atlas volume had been rebacked and re-cornered and the plates in this volume are quite fresh. Each volume has been carefully collated and a full disclosure of collation and condition upon request.
