One of a set of series of photographs of Grant's Council of War at Massaponax Church in Virginia in 1864. Timothy O'Sullivan took his camera to the steeple of the church to take the pictures, making for a much more dynamic and informational scene than would have been afforded from a position on the ground. The officers, present are numbered & include Generals Grant, Meade & Rawlins; Colonel Bowers, Comstock, Dent, Badeau, Porter & Babcock; Captain Parker (Chief Six Nations); C.A. Dana, Asst. Sec. of War, Major Dana, Gen. Dana's Staff, General Meade's staff, S.H. Beckwith, Chief Cryptographer & P.I. Hudson, a.d.c. Carefully indexed in a careful red pen as to the position of each person. This appears to have been a later reissue of the image with the printed caption beneath. Albumen print, 5.5 x 5.5", with 1.75" caption. Very good condition. (Inventory #: 14157)
