Ben Franklin and a few friends formed the Library Company as a subscription library in 1731 and it continues to this day, but now as a research library. Following the appearance of volume I of the printed catalogue in 1835, II appeared in 1844, and III in 1856, the latter completed the holding to 1856 with additions of books not included in volumes I and II.
Provenance: Ex–social club library (i.e., German Society of Pennsylvania). Publisher's speckled sheep, 19th-century bookplates, call number on endpaper, rubber-stamp on half-title and title-page, no other markings. Front cover once detached and now reattached using the Japanese long fiber method. A good copy. (Inventory #: 35634)
