Spirit of the Soviet Union: Anti-Nazi Cartoons and Posters
by Lord Beaverbrook (Foreword by); The Work of Soviet Artists (Illustrations by)
London: The Pilot Press, 1942. First edition. Hardcover. g to vg. Large octavo. 48pp. Contemporary beige buckram, with brown lettering to front cover. Original illustrated wrappers bound in. Striking collection of anti-Nazi images produced by the TASS studio and by other Soviet publishing houses used to fashion an image of the Soviet cause on international shores. The posters featured in this book were offered in late September 1941 by Stalin to the British Minister of Supply Lord Beaverbrook. They were published to create a mood of urgency while visually aggrandizing the Soviet soldier, defining the Nazi enemy as vile and subhuman, and emphasizing the tragic suffering of the Soviet people. They played an important role in the developing visual language of propaganda in both the United Kingdom and the United States, where they were seen by many as models for political artistic involvement. They were also used by a range of international philanthropic agencies like Russian War Relief, Inc. that were established with the goal of collecting and distributing humanitarian aid to various national, ethnic, religious, and social denominations impacted by war. Many of the images were republished for English audiences by Beaverbrook's Ministry of Supply and by other British firms such as Stafford & Co., Ltd. Most of the cartoons featured in this book were drawn by some of the best Soviet cartoonists of the time, such as Boris Yefimov, A. Bazhenov, and Kukryniksy - a collective name derived from the combined names of three caricaturists (Mikhail Kupriyanov, Михаил Васильевич Куприянов), Porfiri Krylov (Порфирий Никитич Крылов), and Nikolai Sokolov (Николай Александрович Соколов). Minor shelf wear. Ex-library copy, with stamp on inside of back cover. Previous owner's signature on upper margin of fly leaf, and minor and sporadic underlining in ink throughout a few text pages. Binding in overall good to good+, interior in good+ to very good condition.
