Carte-de-Visite Photograph Portrait of Samuel Jones Tilden (1814 - 1886) governor of New York and presidential candidate, "...he was committed to limited government, opposed to racial experiments, and dedicated to the cause of individual freedoms and states' rights. He tried desperately to overcome the bitter memories of the war and to address the new problems of a rapidly expanding, increasingly urbanized nation undergoing tumultuous and often corrupting economic development....Tilden's trust became the basis of the New York Public Library."
