New York: Yiddish Scientific Institute-YIVO, 1983. First edition. Softcover. g to vg. Small Quarto. This is a compete and consecutive run of 18 volumes of the annual publication from 1946-1983 (this does not include the proceeding publication simply titled "YIVO Annual"). This is a mixed set, with vols 14 & 15 in green cloth boards with blind stamp publisher's device on the front cover and gilt lettering on spines. All other volumes in the original printed grey wraps with black lettering on front cover and spine.
With the success of Yivo Bleter in Yiddish, YIVO started this publication to address Jewish socio-cultural issues for an English speaking audience. Originally, the title contained mostly translations of YIVO's previously published Yiddish language material, but increasingly contained original material related specifically to Jewish American life. The twofold task of YIVO as stated in the publication is "to study Jewish life, present and past, near and distant, with the tools of modern social science and to interpret Jewish life to the non-Jewish academic world." The publication contains many articles on topics including cultural studies and linguistics by various scholars, academics and cultural figures, including Abraham Joshua Heschel, Paula E. Hyman, Zosa Szajkowski, Ezra Mendelsohn, Joshua Fishman, Isaiah Trunk, Rudolf Glanz, Moses Shulvass, Raphael Mahler, Majer Balaban and Rachel Wischnitzer.
Bindings in good to very good condition, with minor age wear including bumping, scuffing, minor fraying and smudges to front and back covers, spines and top and bottom edges. Interiors in overall very good condition. Many volumes contains an inscription from the previous owner on the front free endpapers. Vol. 12 with small stain to right edge of front cover. Vol. 13 with library pocket glued to front free endpaper and and library stamp on title page. Vol. 16 with library sticker taped to tail of spine, sticker on half title page and book block wavy due to water exposure from pp. 311 through to the back cover. (Inventory #: 40393)
