Adams was serving as the Minister Plenipotentiary to the Court of Berlin at the time of travels through Silesia, a region in central Europe, now mostly in Poland, with parts in Germany and the Czech Republic; the first part describes a six-week tour and gives observations on the people, places and customs, with the second part giving a detailed historical, geographical, and statistical account of the area.
