A LETTER TO THE MOST NOBLE, THE MARQUESS OF LANSDOWN, ON THE AFFAIRS OF PORTUGAL AND SPAIN..
1827 · London
by Walton, Willia
London, 1827. 131pp. Dbd. Titlepage lightly tanned. Damp staining to top corner, else quite clean internally. Good. First edition, with much about Brazil. A strong indictment of Ferdinand VII of Spain, the French occupation of that country, and a plea for the restoration and support of true constitutions for Portugal and Spain. Dom Pedro removed his Court to Brazil in 1826, the year of his death, conditionally abdicating the throne of Portugal to his daughter, Queen Mary II, as well as granting a Portuguese constitution. The conditions of the abdication were not, however, all met, leaving Portugal in a murky political limbo, effectively under the rule of the Emperor of Brazil. Walton argues that this situation must be remedied. William Walton (1784-1857) was educated in Spain and Portugal and traveled in, and wrote about, Spanish America. He was British agent in Santo Domingo, 1802-9. OCLC records just six copies, and no copies have been at auction in the last thirty years. PALAU 373853. OCLC 45289249 (Inventory #: WRCAM40096)
