by [Treaty of Breda
Pari, 1689. 16pp. Quarto. Later marbled boards, leather label. Minor bit of worming in the lower corner, very far from the text. Very good. A French printing of the Anglo-French treaty of Breda, part of the general peace arranged there in 1667. By this treaty the French returned part of the island of St. Kitts to the British, as well as Antigua and Montserrat, and the British returned "Acadia" in Canada to France. This caused trouble later on since the French maintained that this included more than Nova Scotia, thereby opposing the British view, and angering British colonists in New England. The Treaty of Breda is most important for marking the point at which the Anglo-French rivalry in the Americas, centered around economic issues in the West Indies and Acadia, really took off.
