Lexington, Ky.: Printed by Thomas T. Skillman, 1816. 60pp. [bound with:] Porter, Rev. Samuel: A DISCOURSE RELATIVE TO THE ATONEMENT OF CHRIST, DELIVERED IN THE FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH IN PITTSBURGH, OCTOBER 1, 1811, AT THE OPENING OF THE SYNOD OF PITTSBURGH. Pittsburgh: Printed by S. Engles & Co., 1811. 33,pp. Bound with one additional (imperfect) title (see below). Contemporary three quarter calf and marbled boards, gilt leather spine label. Calf worn at spine ends and along front joint, boards rubbed and shelfworn. Bookplate on rear pastedown. Text foxed and stained. Text occasionally trimmed close, affecting one line of text in the Lyttleton. Good. A sammelband containing two early frontier imprints of religious works. The first is a rare Kentucky printing of George Lyttleton's rumination on the life and conversion of St. Paul, taking Paul's apostleship as a demonstration of Christianity's divine revelation. Lyttleton, a member of Parliament and a commissioner of the Treasury, first published this work in 1747. OCLC, Shaw and Shoemaker, and McMurtrie's Kentucky imprints inventory all locate only a single copy of this Lexington printing of Lyttleton's work, at the American Antiquarian Society. The second title is a scarce Pittsburgh imprint, being the remarks made by Rev. Samuel Porter at the opening of the Synod of Pittsburgh in 1811. OCLC and Shaw and Shoemaker together locate only four copies of this title, the only printing of Porter's discourse. Bound first in this volume is a copy (lacking the titlepage) of the London, 1805 edition of Hugh Farmer's AN INQUIRY INTO THE NATURE AND DESIGN OF CHRIST'S TEMPTATION IN THE WILDERNESS. First published in 1761, this is the fourth edition. Lyttleton: SHAW & SHOEMAKER 38116. AII (KENTUCKY) 611. OCLC 233645555. Porter: AMERICAN IMPRINTS 23727. OCLC 14632933. (Inventory #: WRCAM45239)
