MEMORIAL OF THOS. H. DOWLING, AND ACCOMPANYING PAPERS, IN REGARD TO THE ISLAND OF YERBA BUENA, IN THE HARBOR OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA [cover title
1868 · [Washingto
by [Dowling, Thomas H.]
[Washingto, 1868. 14pp. Original yellow wrappers. Slight chip towards head of spine, vertical fold through center. Internally clean. Very good. This memorial reviews the history of the case, showing that Dowling bought the island in 1849 and spent thousands in improvements to the shoreline, but unfortunately had not secured a written title at that time. Includes references to the Limantour case (in which forged land grants were used to claim title to properties in the San Francisco area). This pamphlet includes written testimony of witnesses who could give evidence about the historical uses of Yerba Buena Island (including the statement of J.A. Sutter). Other statements refer to the history of occupation of Yerba Buena Island by the government and by Dowling. Quite rare. This edition not in Cowan. OCLC locates four copies. ROCQ 9209. OCLC 19826245.
