Contemporary bookplate on front pastedown. A near fine copy, unopened. One of thirty-five large paper copies, from an edition limited to 385 copies total. The first appearance in book form, having only previously appeared in an obscure newspaper. The author later served as chief justice of the Supreme Court of California and judge on the Federal Bench. An excellent overland narrative, Eberstadt has enhanced this edition with historical notes and an introduction. "...One of the most readable of all the overland narratives of the gold rush days" - Wagner-Camp. The bookplate, illustrated by the prolific and talented Donn P. Crane, belongs to Guthrie Y. Barber.
