London: Printed by W. Wilkins, Reprinted at Boston: in N.E.: by S. Kneeland, for S. Gerrish and D. Henchman, 1721.. [4],44pp. Antique-style half calf and marbled boards. Waterstained, title-leaf reinforced in outer margin. Contemporary ownership signature of George Breck on titlepage. Good. First American edition of this "notable contribution to colonial political thought, voicing the theory that, by reason of their contractual nature, these charters could not now, after the colonists had fulfilled their obligation by redeeming the wilderness, be abrogated and government restored to the Crown" (Howes). Dummer was a colonial agent for Massachusetts and Connecticut. This and later American editions of 1745 and 1765 no doubt provided fuel for the fire then well kindled. EVANS 2216. ESTC W37897. HOWES D554, "aa." SABIN 21197. COHEN 6521.
