1710 · Amsterda
by Diereville, N. d
Amsterda, 1710. [18],236,[7]pp. 12mo. Modern morocco-grained leather. A very good copy. Lacks the frontis. Amsterdam edition (after the Rouen edition of 1708), of Diereville's account of New France. The author went to New France with a boatload of trade goods for a French merchant firm, and spent a year at Port Royal, from the fall of 1699 to the fall of 1700. His account of the trip includes descriptions of flora and fauna, life in New France, tribes of Indians encountered, and particularly the beaver and the trade in beaver pelts. The work is unusual in that it is partly written in verse. Evidently the author originally intended the whole as a poem, but his friends convinced him it would not be credible unless some of it was in prose. LANDE 184. TPL 125. SABIN 20128. EUROPEAN AMERICANA 710/35. JCB (1)III:137.
