NEWFOUNDLAND TO MANITOBA. A GUIDE THROUGH CANADA'S MARITIME, MINING AND PRAIRIE PROVINCE
1881 · London
by Rae, W. Fraser
London, 1881. x,[1],294pp. plus three folding maps and two plates. Original publisher's cloth stamped in blind and gilt. Light bumping and wear. Authorial presentation inscription on half title; two- page letter from the author bound in before text. Internally clean. Very good. Originally published in the London TIMES. The author is most famous for the ubiquitous WESTWARD BY RAIL, but this publication seems to be much scarcer. Contains a section on western Canada, and several maps of the country. This copy contains a letter from the author to R.M. Kerr - possible the Scottish lawyer and judge Robert Malcolm Kerr. In the letter, dated Aug. 4, 1881, Rae writes: "Dear Sir, As a remembrance of the very pleasant chat which I had with you at Mrs. Caldecott's last Tuesday, permit me to request your acceptance of a volume just published & sent herewith. Should you be able to glance through it during the vacation, you may find some things of interest in it. I hope, after the vacation, I have the pleasure of seeing you & to obtain the list of contributors to Knight's QUARTERLY." He has also inscribed it, with compliments, on the half title.
