1975 · Los Angeles
by Bruce Nicolaysen
Los Angeles: Conway and Associates, 1975. Uncorrected proof of Nicolaysen's 1976 novel, "Perilous Passage," here under the working title, "The Basque." Nicolaysen would adapt his novel into a screenplay, and in 1979 a film was made based on his screenplay, called "The Passage." This proof is an early draft of the novel, presumably produced for purposes of film development.
The film was directed by J. Lee Thompson and starred Anthony Quinn as a Basque shepherd who aids a scientist across the Pyrenees during WWII, all the while pursued by a German sadist. Director Thompson found some fame in the 1960s, with films like "The Guns of Navarone" (1961), "Cape Fear" (1962), and "Mackenna's Gold" (1969), and two notable films in the 1970s, being "Conquest of the Planet of the Apes" (1972) and "Battle for the Planet of the Apes" (1973).
Brown titled wrappers. Title page present, undated, with a credit for writer Nicolaysen. Last leaf of text numbered 410. Mechanical duplication. Pages Near Fine, wrapper Very Good plus, bound internally with three gold brads. (Inventory #: 137929)
