London: Heinemann. Very Good+ in Very Good+ dj. 1964. 2nd printing. Hardcover. NOISBN . [minor shelfwear, spine slightly turned, very light tea-stain on bottom edge of text block, gift inscription (non-authorial) on ffep; jacket slightly faded at spine, otherwise shows only minor edgewear and faint soiling]. Suspense novel about a young footloose American in Europe who gets involved with a wealthy American businessman who has killed a Greek policemen. According to Highsmith biography Andrew Wilson, the author was asked to cut 32 pages from the book for its American edition -- but he doesn't say why. (Thanks for nothing.) Hence, this British edition (albeit here in its second printing) would seem to be the most desirable for the Highsmith collector (if for no other reason than the rear-jacket photo of the smiling author holding up a goat that appears to be tethered to a chain). I suppose I'm obligated to at least mention the rather tepid and instantly forgettable movie that was made from this book in 2014, starring Kirsten Dunst, Viggo Mortensen and Oscar Isaac. Free advice: don't bother; the book will satisfy, the film does not. . (Inventory #: 21224)
