Absecon NJ: MagicImage Filmbooks. Fine in Near Fine dj. (c.1993). First Edition. Hardcover. [lovely, as-new book and jacket, the only flaw in the latter being a crease in the front jacket flap]. (B&W photographs) Autobiography by the founder of the Technicolor Company, Dr. Herbert T. Kalmus, published thirty years after his death. A valuable historical account of the development and growth of the Technicolor process, to be sure, but also exceedingly odd in that Dr. Kalmus chose to omit any mention of his first wife, Natalie Kalmus -- a name familiar to all viewers of vintage Technicolor films, for it was her name that appeared in film credits as "Technicolor Color Consultant" for every Technicolor film until 1948. Well, according to second wife Eleanore, who added two chapters of her own to the end of the original manuscript (which was finished in 1960), "to fill in the missing pieces," the Doctor had plenty of reasons to cut wife Natalie out of the historical picture. Now, it's possible that Eleanore may have just been a wee bit biased in Dr. Kalmus's favor (phrases like "the torture of his first marriage" tend to pop up), but if even half the dirt she slings about the first Mrs. K. is true, that relationship (the marriage itself had ended in divorce pretty early on, in 1921) was the stuff of marital nightmares. There was Natalie's secret abortion, her various mental breakdowns and resultant confinements, her jealousy, her violent temper, her finagling of an important position in the Technicolor Company even after their divorce, her attempted meddling with the production of GONE WITH THE WIND, her long-lasting attempt to wrest control of the company from the Doctor, etc.; it's a pretty harrowing account. .
