A document submitted by Lewis Cass (1782–1866), then Governor of the Michigan Territory, dated 11 February 1831, requesting four townships of land in Michigan be dedicated to the cultivation of mulberry trees and the production of silk. He notes that Michigan is "rapidly filling up with an industrious and hardy people" and that Indiana and Alabama are already benefitting from a similar agricultural arrangement.
