London: John W. Parker & Son, 1859. Second edition, revised and improved, small 8vo, pp. xii, 240, ads; 4 pages of ads tipped in; original brown cloth; bookseller's stamp on pastedown, signature on half-title; a very good copy of an important book. In his introduction to the first edition, Trench states that this work in no way duplicates the work being done on the "new English Dictionary to be published by the Philological Society." However, this glossary was nearly in its final form two years earlier, before work on the O.E.D. was even contemplated, and it anticipates in no small way the principles on which the O.E.D. would be based.
