THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS (The Bessie Pease Edition, Sequel to Her Alice In Wonderland)
by Carroll, Lewis (Charles L[utwidge] Dodgson)
New York: Dodge, 1909. Carroll, Lewis (Charles L[utwidge] Dodgson). THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS. New York: Dodge, (1909). Illustrations by Bessie Pease Gutmann. A FINE bright copy with first issue decorated endpapers in the Original Dust Jacket (which is slightly soiled, a little chipped, but virtually complete and a wonderful survival). Research suggests, but can't confirm, that this is also the first issue of the dust jacket. There are more ornate DJs which occasionally appear bearing the same $1.50 price but also a later street address (not that found on the title page) on the back panel. Whether a first issue or a variant dust jacket, it is rare indeed. The Lovett bibliography doesn't have a clue on the subject. Bessie Pease Gutmann (1876-1960) was an American magazine, calendar and postcard illustrator who specialized in innocent looking cupid-like young children. Of the famous Wonderland illustrators, her Alice looks about three or four years old and thus has a curious purity to her, surprisingly charming and appealing. . First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/Near Fine. Illus. by Bessie Pease Guttman.
