by Rabelais François
Amsterdam: Elzevier, 1666. Second Edition. Hardcover (Vellum). Very Good Condition. 2 volumes in later (ca. 1800) full vellum, some toning, surface marks, spines darkened, but quite sound and attractive overall. Later marbled endpapers added with the armorial bookplate of William Charles Henry and the Dora Carrington designed bookplates of Lytton Strachey in both volumes. Occasional light foxing and toning, titles in red and black and lightly browned. Very clean internally overall. (24), 488, (10)pp; 489-946, (8)pp. Willems 1374The second Elzevier edition after the first of 1663. Strachey was a huge admirer of Rabelais and wrote about him extensively in Landmarks in French Literature (1912). Dora Carrington and Strachey carried on a complicated relationship for years and though she wasn't technically a member of the Bloomsbury Group, she was a significant secondary figure. A nice copy of the second Elzevier and a charming association. Size: duodecimo (12mo). 2-volume set (complete). Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilo.
