Message from the President of the United States, Communicating ... Certain Information Respecting the Pay and Emoluments of Lieutenant General [Winfield] Scott
1857 · Washington, DC
by Pierce, Franklin
Washington, DC: United States Senate, 1857. First edition, Senate Ex. Doc. No. 34, 34th Congress, 3d Session. 8vo. 254 pp. Franklin Pierce and his Secretary of War Jefferson Davis sought to show that Scott, defeated as the Whig candidate for the presidency by the Democratic Party nominee Pierce in 1852, was improperly seeking reimbursements from the government for back pay and expenses incurred during his service in the Mexican War and afterwards; this document gathers relative figures and correspondence concerning the matter. The government subsequently reimbursed Scott a much smaller sum than he was due by law. Endpapers browned, else very good. Somewhat later black half-morocco and marbled boards and endpapers, gilt spine title. (#8264). (Inventory #: 61256)
