The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex.
by Darwin, Charles.
2 vols. London: John Murray, 1871. 2 vols., 8vo, viii, 423 ; 16 (Murray's advertisements, dated January 1871); viii [ii] 475 16 (Murray's advertisements, dated January 1871)pp., with numerous wood-engraved illustrations in the text. Original green cloth lettered in gilt, slight rubbing to tips, library stamps in red at front and back of both vols., upper hinge of vol. 2 with signs of minimal repair, one signature in vol. 2 springing. An attractive set with minimal ex-library damage. First edition, first issue, with the publisher's ads dated January 1871 present in both volumes, the first word is "Transmitted" on page 297 in Volume I (changed to "When" in later editions), and the errata on the verso of the title leaf of Volume II with seventeen errata lines for Volume I, eight lines for Volume II. This set was deaccessioned by Lehigh University and later sold by John Howell-Books (with their notes in the back of vol. I). A landmark book in the history of science, most notably for the use of the word “evolution” by Darwin for the first time (vol. I, page 2). Also Darwin’s famous speculation appears in print for the first time: “"In each great region of the world the living mammals are closely related to the extinct species of the same region. It is therefore probable that Africa was formerly inhabited by extinct apes closely allied to the gorilla and chimpanzee; and as these two species are now man’s nearest allies, it is somewhat more probable that our early progenitors lived on the African continent than elsewhere "(Vol. 1, p. 199).
