Overall, a handsome copy, inscribed by Lowe. Sacred Summits is English mountaineer Peter Boardman's account of a single climbing year in which he ascended three different mountains, each of which is regarded as sacred by the peoples who live below them. Specifically, Sacred Summits discusses Boardmans' expeditions to Carstensz Pyramid (Punstas Jaya) in the Snow Mountains of New Guinea from 1978-1979 and Kangchenjunga and Gauri Shankar in the Himalayas in 1979. Its title refers to the conviction held by many of the locals that the highest peaks' summits are the homes of the gods - a belief that Boardman respected by ending his climb just short of the summit "in deference to the inhabiting deity." Notably, Sacred Summits was published posthumously after Peter Boardman died on the North Ridge of Mount Everest in May 1982.. Signed. 1st Edition.. Hard Cover. Fine/Dust Jacket Included.
