London: The Travel Book Club, no date [circa 1960] Translated by Maurice Michael. Travel Book Club edition. Personal copy of mountaineer George Lowe, with his bookplate adhered to the front pastedown. Publisher's blue cloth, lettered in gilt; in the original pictorial dust jacket, with a black and white photograph of an Arctic landscape to the front panel, lettered in white and black. Near fine, with some light wear to the extremities, otherwise fresh binding, bright and clean interior; unclipped dust jacket, with some chips to the spine ends, light rubbing to the hinges, faint toning to the spine, a hint of rubbing to the otherwise fresh panels. Overall, a bright and pleasing copy. This copy of Two Against the Ice was presented to Lowe in 1960 by English mountaineer Harry Pretty in preparation for the British East Greenland Expedition of the same year. Notably, Pretty founded the Oread Mountaineering Club of the Peak District in Derbyshire, England, and, through this organization, he completed several important surveys in South Georgia and the Norwegian Arctic region. Two Against the Ice is Danish Arctic explorer Ejnar Mikkelsen's account of his 1909-1912 expedition to recover the journals from 1906-1908 Danish Danmark Expedition to North Greenland. Along with Iver Iverson, Mikkelsen hoped to discover the maps and diaries left behind by Ludvig Mylius-Erichsen, Niels Peter Høeg Hagen, and Jørgen Brønlund, whose achievements included disproving Robert Peary's proposed coastline and charted a new, revised coastal map. After successfully recovering these materials as well as Mylius-Erichsen's body, Mikkelsen and Iverson returned to their camp on Shannon Island, only to find that their crew had left. Mikkelsen and Iverson remained stranded on the island for two winters before being rescued.. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Dust Jacket Included. (Inventory #: WGL037)
