Both the first and second printings were issued in December, 1849. Corners and hinges skillfully repaired; fine copy.. 12mo, original blind-stamped black cloth, gilt lettering. Two pages of publisher's terminal advertisements. Emerson's essays on Plato, Swedenborg, Montaigne, Shakespeare, Napoleon and Goethe. Inscribed on the front free endpaper to "Mrs. Bancroft / with affectionate regards of / R. W. Emerson / Concord Feb. 8, 1850." Mrs. Bancroft was Elizabeth Davis Bancroft, wife of the historian George Bancroft. The Bancroft and Emerson families were close. (Inventory #: 27051)
