Richmond, Virginia: Marsh Art Gallery, University of Richmond, 2001. Softcover. VG; clean, bright, tight but with art gallery ex-lib. sticker on lower front cover/stamp on title page. Color wraps with teal lettering. Blue parchment end papers. 72 pp. with 24 color plates and 1 bw photo portrait. Catalogue from the exhibition of August - September 2001. Includes essays by Richard Waller and Stephen J. Tyson, a checklist of 84 works, a bw portrait photo of de Knight, and a biographical chronology. Beautiful illustrations. This exhibition was the first retrospective of de Knight's work organized after his death in 1995. Over one hundred works of art, created between 1939 to 1994, traced the development and ultimate mastery of this outstanding and provocative American artist. Included in the exhibition BUT NOT IN THE CATALOGUE was an unpublished portfolio of 22 illustrations by de Knight, for Army Life in a Black Regiment. Written by Thomas W. Higginson in 1870, this book recounts the story of the first black unit for the Union during the American Civil War. The illustrations, created between 1969 and 1973, were drawn with the same intensity that we find in the artist's other works. Beautiful plates; an engaging catalogue.
