Mander s'ischt Zeit! (Original Anti-Semitic and Anti-Schuschnigg Postcard)
by Köck, Franz (Illustration by)
Graz: Leopold Stocker Verlag, 1938. First edition. Postcard(s). vg. Anti-Schuschnigg and anti-Semite color-illustrated postcard produced shortly after the Anschluss (annexation of Austria by Nazi Germany) in 1938.The illustration "Befreite Ostmark" (Free Eastern March) is after a watercolor by Franz Köck. It depicts Austrian Chancellor Kurt von Schuschnigg fleeing Austria, along with a Catholic priest, a politician, a caricatured Jew holding a box filled with money, and a Schuschnigg Youth (with a grossly caricatured Jewish face). The distraught group seems to be swept away with a wall of Nazi flags pushing behind them. The caption underneath the illustration "Mander, 's ischt Zeit !" (Men, the time has come!) echoes the historic call-to-arms of heroic Tyrolean freedom fighter Andreas Hofer. At verso, the unwritten card is stamped with an olive 6-Pf. stamp of Breslau postmarked twice (once in Stuttgart, and once in Graz) on July 25, 1938. The postcard measures 5 7/8 x 4 1/8" and is in very good condition.
