Overall an excellent copy. First edition. Black, who occupied the chair of chemistry at Edinburgh for over thirty years, was one of the most popular and celebrated lecturers of the last half of the eighteenth century. As he did not publish his lectures or experiments, his pupil, colleague and friend John Robison (undertook this posthumous publication, adding valuable notes and a long preface. He dedicated the work to his colleague James Watt. According to Neville, the index, having been "published shortly after the text, is often missing; it is not in the copies described by Bolton, Duveen, and Honeyman."Black (1728-1799) was the chief founder of chemistry as an exact science, known for the discoveries of latent heat, fixed air, and the nature of alkaline earths. His popularity as a lecturer was expansive, including not only his students, but scientists from Europe and America, as well as non-scientists alike. Robison (1739-1805), professor of natural philosophy at Edinburgh and a member of the Edinburgh Philosophical Society, worked with Watt on an early steam car, and (interestingly enough) invented the siren.
