Civil War Photograph Album of Robert Townsend, Captain, USS Essex, Ironclad. Townsend’s photograph album, containing 48 images (cartes de visite), mostly of crew members of the USS Essex, an ironclad serving on the Mississippi River during the American Civil War. Also incuded is an instructional letter from Townsend to his son, Robert Jr., on the boy’s 11th birthday, Oct. 4, 1865.
