Mathews (1831-1874) , by Nolie Mumie, a hardcover biography with patterned paper boards, blue cloth spine, and title label. 78 pages, with uncut pages, a tipped in frontispiece portrait, and a folding map of Mathews' burial location at rear. 2. Interesting Narrative; Being a Journal of the Flight of Alfred E. Mathews, of Stark Co. , Ohio, by A. E. Mathews. A softcover with blue wrappers, 35 pages. 3. Pencil Sketches of Colorado, by A. E. Mathews, is in blue linen boards with a gilt imprint, measuring 19" x 13 1/2", unpaginated. Light fading of one area on front board, light soil on endpapers. The detailed color illustrations are of Colorado just after the Civil War, where Mathews made his home and became one of the most important artists of the early frontier West. His journal and the biography describe the journey where he traveled north from Alabama at the onset of the Civil War, his service as a Union soldier, and his later years in Colorado.
