An assortment of dated articles on a variety of subjects from newspapers such as NY Weekly Witness, Poughkeepsie Press, Fishkill Journal, Evening Post, Evening Sun, Brooklyn Eagle, NY Press, Savannah News, Wall Street News, NY Tribune etc. Gulian Crommelin Verplanck [1786-1870] was a native New Yorker (descended from Dutch colonists), attorney, politician, writer and member of the "Knickerbocker Group". He was also elected to the NYS Assembly and Senate and later to the federal House of Representatives where he served as Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee.Stiff paper wraps, handmade accordian style book, 4 x 9", 29 pp, articles carefully laid down some with manuscript publication dates and sources, others ink stamped. Articles vary in topic from newsy tidbits on "How to Bathe", "The Destructive Prairie Dog" , "Verplanck Ice Cutter's Strike", "Power Cheaply Produced" (water wheels), " A Woman Who Can Fight" to local news of deaths, weddings of residents from Fishkill and environs. Verplanck's name is handwritten on the back of the homemade book.
