The action of Westward Ho! takes place in the 16th century, and charts the adventures of Amyas Leigh, who fights as a privateer in the Caribbean and along the Spanish Main. Interestingly, the novel lends its name to a village in Devon, and was also extremely popular when it was published, quickly becoming a children's classic. Kingsley himself was close confidant of Charles Darwin, and one of the earliest supporters of the theory of evolution. "…one of the strongest and most brightly colored of historical novels." (English Prose, ed. Henry Craik). Very Good.
