Amsterdam: D.A.V.I.D., 1945. First edition. Hardcover. f to vg. Quarto. 48pp. Original illustrated dust-jacket over blind paper covered boards. A compendium of some of the best articles and illustrations published in the underground periodical "Metro," during the 11 months of its existence. The first issue appeared on November 15, 1944 in an edition of 10,000 copies. In total, 36 issues were published until October 1945. Jan Gerhard Toonder was the chief editor and wrote most of the articles. The main cartoonist was his brother Marten Toonder*. Both disliked the seriousness of the other underground newspapers. In "Metro," they parodied not only the occupiers and their collaborators but also the underground press. Instead of making an appeal to hand the newspaper over to a fellow citizen, they urged its readers to throw it away as soon as possible."Metro" published also drawings of other well known illustrators from the Toonder Studio's**, such as Henk Kabos, Wim van Wieringen, Carol Voges and Hans G. Kresse.Dust-jacket rubbed and partly chipped at upper margin. Offsetting to endpapers. Slight age-toning along paper margin. Text in Dutch. DJ in overall fair to good-, binding in good+, interior in good+ to very good condition. * Marten Toonder (1912-2005) was a Dutch comic strip creator, born in Rotterdam. He was probably the most successful comic artist in the Netherlands and had a great influence on the Dutch language by introducing new words and expressions. He is most famous for his series Tom Puss and Panda. ** The Toonder Studio's (the misplaced apostrophe was part of its name) was founded in Nazi-occupied Amsterdam in 1941 by Marten Toonder, an illustrator and a comic artist with a fond interest in animation. His comics were extremely successful in the Netherlands and this gave him the opportunity to hire talented artists to work for him.
