Extensive research and notes, likely dating from 1891-1892 for the 1893 publication of The Refugees. Comprising two notebooks, one of 14 plus pages, titled “England in the year 1624,” the other titled “1620” and signed on the cover label, over 83 pages, including a hand-drawn map. Included in addition are 14 plus foolscap ms. pages (some foxing and blotting). Nearly all of the notes are in ink, although a small portion are in pencil, and there are scattered notes in an unidentified hand. Aside from the expected tears, dog-eared and yellowed pages and minor smudges, in excellent condition. These pieces were in the 2004 auction sale of papers from Doyle’s estate. (Inventory #: 31046P)
