The Principal Islands of the East Indies, According to ye Newest Observations
by MOLL, Hermann
London: Herman Moll, 1712. unbound. Map. Uncolored engraving. Image measures 7" x 10" This striking map of the East Indies dates to 1712 and depicts the principal islands of the East Indies. It covers from Siam and Sumatra eastward to include part of New Guinea. The Malay Peninsula, Borneo, Sumatra, the Celebes, the Philippines, Indonesia, Java, Bali and other important islands are also noted. Although some of the islands are presented in a very speculative form, there is spectacular amount of detail, particularly the naming of several small islands. The southern part of Borneo is labeled "Pepper Coast", signifying the region as one of the major exporters of the spices. The map is in good condition with minor wear along the original folds and minor foxing. Edges show some toning. Original plate mark is visible. Nice dark impression, with slight fading near Cambodia. Of German or Dutch origin, Herman Moll (c. 1654-1732) settled in London in the 1670's where he worked as an engraver for Moses Pitt. By the turn of the century, Moll became the foremost map publisher in England, where he produced Atlases and maps. As an engraver, cartographer, mapseller and globemaker he appealed to the public with his unusual views and vignettes. As the demand for his work was sustained, he issued many revised editions of his work. (Inventory #: 267796)
